INTRODUCTION:

This statement of work details work to be accomplished under the Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Broad Agency Announcement BAA 97-07 Collaboration, Visualization, Information Management (CVIM) Technology in the Analysis Environments (AE) interest area. The CVIM program focuses on the integration of humans and networked information systems to improve collaboration and information utility. This program builds on and extends ongoing efforts to build collaboration middleware and digital library technology. The AE interest area is concerned with development of revolutionary user-centered information analysis environments supporting correlation and manipulation of multimedia and complex information resources across disciplinary barriers. Research areas include: acquisition, organization, manipulation and use of passive and active information resources and services based on semantic content, visualizing complex and abstract information spaces, value-based filtering, and search, retrieval, and manipulation of multimedia and complex documents.

OBJECTIVE:

The objective is to develop and demonstrate a prototype, generation-after-next, information analysis environment based on scalable semantics and demonstrating semantic interoperability.

This will require the following major efforts:

a. Specify, implement, refine, test and package the core algorithms needed to implement semantic services for concept spaces, category spaces, automatic meta-data generation, and meta-map generation.
b. Design and build the Interspace information analysis environment based on the semantic services and demonstrating semantic interoperability by providing semantic indexing, semantic retrieval, multi-view interfaces, and semantic federation.
c. Research into Net infrastructure to simulate and determine generation-after next performance requirements including specialized hardware and visualization capabilities.

3. MAJOR REQUIREMENTS:

In order to accomplish the objective of this statement of work, it will be necessary to complete the following tasks.

a. Semantic Middleware Services

Task 2: Basic algorithms for text-based vocabulary switching.
Task 3: Basic category map algorithm development.

Task 1: Texture-based image algorithm testing and packaging.
Task 2: Semi-automatic concept mapping algorithms.
Task 3: Category map visualization algorithms.

Task 1: Real-time concept space algorithms
Task 2: Automatic concept mapping algorithms.
Task 3: Real-time category mapping algorithms.

b. Interspace Analysis Environment

Task 1: Interspace "Information Unit" framework.
Task 2: Basic information indexing, retrieval and display services.

Task 1: Text-based demonstration collection development.
Task 2: Text-based Ingestion, importation, and metadata extraction services.
Task 3: Integration of text-based Semantic Middleware Services.

Task 1: Image-based demonstration collection development.
Task 2: Image-based Ingestion, importation, and metadata extraction services.
Task 3: Integration of image-based Semantic Middleware Services.

4. GOVERNMENT PROVIDED INFORMATION AND EQUIPMENT: None.

5. MEETINGS AND REVIEWS: The following meetings and reviews are anticipated:
a. Biannual In-Progress Reviews (IPR) to be conducted by Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR) .
b. CVIM program reviews and meetings as directed.

6. TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: The following trips are anticipated:
a. Four trips per year for two people to CVIM program meetings and demonstrations.
b. Four trips per year for two people to visit other Testbed participants.
c. One trip per year for two people to make conference presentations.
