cMap is an implementation of a special neural network known as
a Self-Organizing Map (SOM). We use cMap to determine clusters
or categories in text document and image datasets for which the internal
structure is not known.
The Category Map which is output from cMap is then graphically
displayed in a three-dimensions to allow the user to "fly through"
the clusters in an effort to explore and browse the dataset.
This Information Spaceflight will enable users to browse
a large, unknown dataset. The user will quickly be able to zoom in on
an area of interest and subsequently search that area with more traditional
approaches.
